G&W Bavarian Style Sausage Company History

history_pic_2Today G&W Bavarian Style Sausage Company is run by two cousins, Bob and Gerhard Wanninger.

The cousins are descendants of Helmut and Henry Wanninger, brothers who emigrated from Regensburg, Germany to St. Louis, Missouri in 1965. Helmut and Henry were the sons of a German Sausage Meister in Bavaria, who in turn was the son of a Sausage Meister.

Henry and Helmut brought with them the family’s secret recipe for Bavarian-style sausage and founded G&W Bavarian Style Sausage (G&W). With their partner, Otto Gummerscheimer, G&W grew to serve not only immigrants in the German-influenced South St. Louis neighborhoods, but also many local businesses.

To this day G&W’s products are found on the menus of many local St. Louis restaurants and in the meat market of various grocery stores. In fact, G&W has its own retail store at 4828 Parker Avenue in St. Louis, Missouri. Their product is also sold at many festivals and local attractions, such as Grant’s Farm and the St. Louis Zoo.

history_pic_1G&W Sausage Company is known as a producer of high-quality products served around the dinner table and at family gatherings.

Today’s owners, Gerhard and Bob, both worked in the family business as teenagers. It was then they learned the process for making the finest Bavarian sausage from the same secret recipe their grandfather created in his native Germany.

Bob and Gerhard have grown the business to provide over 30 different varieties of Bavarian-style sausage, from bratwurst and liverwurst to their locally famous Landjager beef stick. In fact, they continue experimenting and creating new products.

Gerhard and Bob welcome this opportunity to introduce their sausage products to you and your family. Remember the company slogan: You can’t beat G&W meat!
